About the Farm and the Farmers

What is regenerative farming?

While large farms typically work the land to maximize output, we focus on restoring and nurturing healthy soil with farming practices that protect soil structure, reduce external inputs, and work within our small farm’s ecosystem. Regenerative farming strives to work with nature rather than against it.

At our farm, everything works together and nothing goes to waste.

  • We make our own compost using our family’s food scraps, chicken manure from our backyard chicken coop, livestock manure from our family ‘guard donkey,’ and vegetation from our gardens. That compost is then mixed into our garden beds to add nutrients to the soil without external inputs.

  • Our vegetables are planted in such a way as to shade the surrounding soil, discouraging weed growth and eliminating the need for herbicides.

  • We rely on a variety of natural pest management techniques to avoid using any synthetic or chemical pesticides and ensure our fruits and vegetables remain the highest quality – for our family and yours.

why “arrowhead acres”?

Before moving to Somerset, CA and starting our family farm, Remington worked as a wildland firefighter with the Arrowhead Hotshots crew. He spent 10+ years with the National Parks Service, whose symbol is an arrowhead, where he gained a love for natural landscapes and a passion for land management and maintenance that would reduce fire danger and maintain thriving ecosystems.

He then studied Horticulture at UC Davis where he focused on biodiversity in California native plants, worked at the famous Arboretum, and grew his love of regenerative landscapes.

The arrowhead is a fitting symbol for our farm. It’s a simple tool that’s been used throughout history and represents how we use some technology and modern practices, but it’s very primitive compared to big farms today. We will stay true to our roots and rely on sustainable practices that have been used for centuries to produce high-quality food and nurture our land.

What kind of produce do you sell?

The fruits and vegetables we sell at the local Farmers Market are just the things we like to grow and eat ourselves (but we grow too much!) so there’s a a nice variety to choose from. In recent years, we’ve had melons, pumpkins, onions, garlic, heirloom tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, sauce/slicing tomatoes, hot peppers, sweet peppers, carrots, corn, apples, and more.

We love to try new and rare varieties and always choose the highest quality seeds to start our plants. We’ve had some strange items over the years, like Chocolate Butans, the worlds’ hottest hot peppers (would not grow again!), so there’s always something different coming out of our garden.

And you have baked goods, too?

Yep! We have fresh-baked, homemade sourdough bread and other seasonal baked goods available. Our sourdough uses a 100+ year-old starter and is made 100% by hand in our home kitchen. Plus, it includes local, organically-grown, heritage whole wheat flour from Eck Farms and Tegner Mill.

Our baked goods are always available at the Farmers Market alongside our farm-fresh produce, but we also have the option to pre-order to ensure there’s some waiting with your name on it in case we sell out.
